Who can know what I say in therapy

You need to understand how personal information is protected before sharing it. “Confidentiality” means the professional has a duty to protect it; it does not mean disclosure can never occur.

Confidentiality does not require you to stay silent

The psychologist has the duty to protect what you share. They cannot impose that same duty on you or forbid you from discussing your own sessions and their content with anyone you choose.

You decide whether and what to share about your own experience with a friend, relative, another professional or a body considering a concern. You do not need the therapist's permission to seek support or a second opinion. You can also choose to tell nobody; your privacy is your choice.

An instruction such as “you must not discuss your sessions with anyone” is a serious warning sign. You are not responsible for shielding the professional from criticism or scrutiny. Your decision to speak does not remove their confidentiality duty.

Understand the main rules early

The therapist should explain what is recorded, storage, access, retention and circumstances in which information may be shared, including professional coordination or specific legal obligations.

A relative or employer paying for sessions does not, by itself, gain access to their content. Any proposed disclosure needs an appropriate basis and limits.

You can ask: “If I tell you something that worries you about my safety, what would you do?”

Recording and digital tools

Recording, transcription and AI tools may send information to another company or service. Before agreeing, understand the purpose, destination, access, retention and options if you decline.

You do not need technical expertise to ask: “Can we have the session without this recording?” Your agreement does not remove the professional's responsibility for appropriate and lawful safeguards.
